The Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817–1818) marked the final collapse of Maratha power in western India. Peshwa Baji Rao II, having suffered defeats like at Khadki, was pursued by the British East India Company force. It was during this retreat that the pivotal encounter at Koregaon Bhima occurred.
On January 1, 1818, a small force—around 834 Company troops—advanced to reinforce Pune. They unexpectedly faced a 2,000-strong Peshwa attack, despite being vastly outnumbered. Led by Captain Francis Staunton, the Company troops held their ground for nearly 12 hours before the Maratha forces withdrew, fearful of incoming reinforcements.
Casualties painted a grim picture: British estimates placed Maratha losses at 500–600, while the Company suffered around 275 killed, wounded, or missing. Among the dead were soldiers from diverse castes and religions: Mahars, Marathas, Rajputs, Muslims, even Jews.
Though not a decisive blow in tactical terms, the battle ultimately contributed to the Peshwa’s defeat and the British consolidation of power. Some British accounts termed it a small victory, but its long-term reverberations were greater than its immediate outcome.
In 1822, a 65-foot obelisk was commissioned at Koregaon to commemorate the fallen Company soldiers. The inscriptions honor Captain Staunton’s detachment and list names of the dead, celebrating the engagement as “one of the proudest triumphs of the British Army in the East.”
Significantly, 22 of the 49 names inscribed were of Mahar caste soldiers. The Mahar Regiment even carried the obelisk’s image in its crest until India’s independence. Though created by colonial masters, the memorial evolved into a site of Dalit pride.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s pilgrimage to the Koregaon obelisk on January 1, 1927, transformed the site into a landmark of Dalit assertion. He recognized the Mahars’ role in that battle as an enduring testament to oppressed communities’ agency.
Over decades, Bhima Koregaon has become known as Shaurya Bhoomi—the land of valor—and especially as a Dalit symbol of resistance against caste oppression. Annually, thousands of Dalits converge here on New Year’s Eve to honor their ancestors and claim a narrative of courage.

Scholars caution, though, that myths play a vital role in community identity-building and that multiple memories can coexist.
In 2018, the bicentennial of the battle turned tragic. Celebrations on January 1 escalated into violent clashes between Dalit groups and right-wing Hindu factions. A 28-year-old man died, dozens were injured, and hundreds detained. The unrest sparked statewide protests and widespread tensions.
A state commission was formed to investigate, but the violence revealed how deeply entrenched, unresolved caste tensions remain—centuries after the battle itself.
Bhima Koregaon lives on in films and documentaries—like Somnath Waghmare’s 2017 documentary and Ramesh Thete’s upcoming period drama starring Arjun Rampal—highlighting its emotional and cultural resonance.

“The Peshwas were notorious for their persecution of Mahars. Mahar Dalits faced several injustices under the Peshwa rule,” notes historian Shraddha Kumbhojkar, highlighting why the battle matters beyond strategy.
